Common Questions

How do I get started?

Book a free 20-minute consultation, or reach me at (510) 616-4493 or hello@luisamancera.me. I’ll get back to you within two business days. The consultation is a chance to tell me what's going on, ask me anything, and see whether we're a good fit.

If you're in crisis, call or text 988, or call Alameda County's 24-hour crisis line at 1-800-309-2131. In a life-threatening emergency, call 911. I can't respond to messages in real time.

What happens in the first session?

We'll talk about what brought you in, what you'd like to be different, and I’ll start getting to know you. For couples, I'll get to know you both together, and we'll decide how to move forward from there.

How much does it cost?

50-minute session: $225

75-minute session: $337

Individuals usually meet for 50 minutes. Couples can choose 50 or 75, and we can figure out what feels right as we go. I keep a limited number of reduced-fee spots.

Do you take insurance?

I'm out-of-network with all insurance plans, and I provide a monthly superbill you can submit for reimbursement. To see what you'd get back, ask your insurance company:

  • Do I have out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits?

  • What's my deductible?

  • What percentage is reimbursed?

How often will we meet?

Most people start with weekly sessions. We'll adjust the frequency over time based on what you need.

How long does therapy take?

It depends on what brings you in. Some people come for a few months to work through a specific challenge, and others stay longer for deeper work. We'll check in regularly about how it's going and what you want next.

Do you offer therapy in Spanish?

Yes. I offer sessions in English, Spanish, or a mix of both, whichever feels most natural to you.

Do you offer in-person and online sessions?

Both. I see clients in person in Oakland and online throughout California.

Who do you work with?

Adults, individually and as couples. People come to me after a loss, in the middle of a big change, or because a relationship isn't working the way they want it to. My practice is queer-affirming, and I especially enjoy working with people who've lived between cultures or languages.

What's your approach?

I'm not a nodding-and-"tell me more" kind of therapist. You'll get honest reactions, some humor, and my full attention. I blend talk therapy, mindfulness, and somatic practices with practical tools.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes. What you share stays between us, with a few legal exceptions: if there's a serious risk of harm to you or someone else, if I learn of abuse of a child, elder, or dependent adult, or if a court orders disclosure.

What's your cancellation policy?

Consistency matters for progress. Here's my policy:

  • If you're late by 10+ minutes without prior notice, it's considered a no-show and you'll be charged the full fee.

  • Cancellations within 48 hours of your session incur the full fee unless we reschedule within the same business week.
